US Open player breaks down in tears during an interview after ruining the career of an opponent

At Flushing Meadows, Pegula defeated her fellow American, Rogers, 6-4, 6-3. Rogers announced her retirement after the big tournament in New York.

Following the match, there were tearful moments on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium as sixth-seeded Pegula paid respect to Rogers.

After securing her place in the second round, Pegula exclaimed, "Oh Gosh, I am going to get emotional."

"Wow, I'm crying, congratulations on such an incredible career. I apologise, but my emotions are rising.

She and I used to play 16 under Southerns, and now that we are her, I think it's awesome.

We grew up in the same parts and played juniors together, so it's incredibly strange that we get to play a night match at [Arthur] Ashe.
